Kim Kardashian embraced the “Fashion Is Art” theme at the 2026 Met Gala, showing up in one of the night’s most talked-about outfits. For her 13th appearance, she set out to make her look a true work of art.
Working closely with her creative director, Nadia Lee Cohen, Kardashian collaborated with British pop artist Allen Jones to create a sculptural tangerine breastplate. Rather than casting her own body, the piece was based on a vintage mold from the late 1960s, giving it a distinct artistic origin tied directly to Jones’s earlier work.

The breastplate was made from fiberglass and followed an unusual process. Once shaped and finished, it was painted a bright orange at an auto body shop, a place usually reserved for cars. This choice gave the artistic piece an industrial twist, mixing skilled craft with a surprising method.
The original idea was a full-body cast, but the design was later changed to a bodysuit style to make it easier to move in. The finished look was structured yet wearable, landing between sculpture and fashion.
For the lower half of her outfit, Kardashian worked with Whitaker Malem, where artisans Patrick Whitaker and Keir Malem made a custom leather skirt. Jones added hand-painted brushstrokes in matching sunset orange, visually connecting the skirt to the breastplate.

The outfit was about more than just how it was made, it was also about connecting different eras. From the vintage mold to the modern finish, every part mixed the past with the present. Kardashian said she wanted something original and current, not just a repeat of an old idea.
Kardashian is known for bold choices at the Met Gala, and this year was no different. By blending fine art inspiration with unconventional approaches to clothing, she created a look that stood out for both its appearance and its creative process.
