Morristown, NJ, Goth/folk project Mourning Coffee has officially released its new album, A Slow Hearse Leaves Everyone Yearning, which arrived on April 23, 2026. The 13-track record explores the nonlinear process of grief, turning deeply personal experiences of loss into an immersive and reflective listening experience.
At the center of Mourning Coffee’s music is what founder Christian describes as “pain awakening,” the act of confronting emotional hardship and transforming it into something meaningful. This latest release also marks an important evolution for the project, as it is the first album created with a fully realized band lineup contributing throughout the recording process.
“This whole record is like a funeral for the death of a dream or idea that’s been stubbornly clung to for a lifetime,” Christian shared.
Written over several years in places reflecting the project’s emotional duality, from coffee shops to cemeteries, the album blends warmth with melancholy to create Mourning Coffee’s signature goth/folk atmosphere. The songs combine intimate self-recorded elements with production support from Sam Stauff, who helped shape key moments across the record.
Musically, the album draws inspiration from artists such as Death Cab for Cutie, The Cure, Ben Howard, and The War on Drugs. Across the project, layered instrumentals meet emotionally detailed songwriting focused on identity, longing, and resilience.
Since forming in 2022, Mourning Coffee has grown its audience through streaming releases and live performances. Earlier releases accumulated tens of thousands of streams, while the project’s cover of a Fleetwood Mac track surpassed 100,000 streams online. The group has appeared at venues including White Eagle Hall and regional festivals.
Beyond the music itself, Mourning Coffee has remained connected to causes focused on environmental awareness and suicide prevention, using the project as a space for reflection, healing, and conversation about mental health and self-worth.
With A Slow Hearse Leaves Everyone Yearning, Mourning Coffee delivers its most fully developed work to date, offering listeners a deeply personal record suited for quiet nights, reflective moments, and long drives with nowhere specific to be.
