Surprising Ways to Increase Your Self Esteem

Self-esteem is a vital component of strong mental health. It is how you view yourself in relation to the world and the value you attribute to yourself. There are many reasons that a person might experience low self-esteem, such as feeling inadequate compared to other people or having been taught from a young age not to value themselves. Fortunately, it is possible to build self-esteem back to healthy levels. Here are a few surprising methods of boosting your self-esteem.

Surround Yourself with People Who Love You

Sometimes the reason you might feel bad about yourself could be due to the attitudes of people around you. For example, if you are part of a friend group where people regularly make fun of you or insult you, it’s understandable that your self-esteem would take a hit. Learn how to identify those in your life who make you feel devalued and either explain to them how you feel or choose to remove yourself from their company. Instead, seek out people who appreciate your qualities and have your best interests at heart. It can be painful to pull away from the people you are most accustomed to spending time with, but if you feel better about yourself when you aren’t around them, it’s for the best.

Challenge Yourself to Try Uncomfortable Tasks

Another way that you can start to build up your self-esteem is by continually proving to yourself that you are capable of facing your fears. If, for example, your low self-esteem derives from a sense of intellectual inadequacy, find ways to prove yourself wrong about these supposed flaws. Challenge yourself to read a notoriously difficult book or learn a complicated topic. If you find yourself feeling worthless when you think about how hard you find social situations, push yourself to make small talk with one stranger at least once next week. These kinds of manageable challenges can help to break down the false negative image you have of yourself and build up a more positive, accurate one in its place.

Focus Your Attention Outside of Yourself

As the term suggests, self-esteem is about the self. While it is extremely difficult to escape the self, it is possible to shift your attention away from it so you aren’t focused on the pain of low self-esteem. Doing good in the community or choosing to donate to veterans are just two examples of how charitable and generous acts can help you to take your mind off of yourself in the pursuit of helping others. Self-esteem becomes less and less of an issue when you stop focusing on yourself. Instead of worrying about what other people think about you, concentrate on being a good person.

It isn’t easy to boost your self-esteem, especially if you have been tackling problems with it for a long time. Requesting the advice and guidance of a professional is the most effective way to work on your self-esteem issues, but you can start the process of feeling better about yourself by reminding yourself that you are loved, capable, and kind.
