A Web of Deception in the Dark
Karma on Netflix begins with a bang and doesn’t let up. This Korean thriller goes deep into the lives of six morally suspect characters, whose desperation and secrets set them down dark, convoluted paths. The six-episode series doesn’t judge—rather, it lays bare the raw, unvarnished result of human action when pressed to extremes.
In the first episode, a man is rescued from a fire by doctor Ju-yeon (played by Shin Min-a). When he introduces himself to her by name, her shocked reaction establishes the tone. Who is this man, and what from his past is linked to him that links him to her? As the case unfolds, the audience is straight away brought into a world where one thing leads to another.
The Domino Effect of Desperation
The movie begins with a factory laborer (Lee Hee-joon), who is in debt after betting on a non-existent cryptocurrency. Being short of money, he makes another factory worker murder his father for the insurance payout. But things do not go as planned. At the same time, the action turns to ‘Glasses’ (Lee Kwang-soo), who gets himself into trouble after late-night drunk driving and murders someone brutally.
His attempt to conceal the crime brings him into contact with an enigmatic witness (Park Hae-soo of ‘Squid Game’ renown), whose veiled blackmail takes away more than his secrets. Every character’s choice sets off another’s crisis, a chain reaction of survival, guilt, and unforeseen repercussions.
When Desperation Turns to Decay
As the series unfolds, it strips away the layers of each character’s history. The audience gradually pieced the pieces together: all these various tales are connected by destiny, desperation, and a private investigator trying to piece the pieces together. Who the burned man was, hinted at the start, hovers over the entire series like a specter.
Director Il-Hyeong Lee skillfully navigates the multi-layered storytelling. And yet, despite the convolutions, the story is kept neat and taut with well-executed turns of twist which put the viewers on the edge of their seats. Long dialogues are eschewed in favor of punchy visuals, energetic performances, and seamless action.
Final Verdict
Karma on Netflix is an engrossing but intense journey into the seedy side of human nature. With fantastic cast, tautly constructed script, and narrative that will not let go, it is a great weekend viewing for thrillers fans who would want to witness the grim realities that lie beneath. It’s not crime—it’s survival, sin, and what happens when humans are pushed to extremes.
