A major new scientific review is changing how people view vaping, and its findings are hard to overlook. Researchers from UNSW Sydney have found that e-cigarettes are likely to cause lung and oral cancers, even though long-term studies are still underway.
The study, published in the journal Carcinogenesis, is notable for its thoroughness. The researchers used clinical observations, lab experiments, and animal studies rather than relying on a single type of evidence. This makes it one of the most complete reviews so far on vaping’s potential to cause cancer.
Lead researcher Bernard Stewart says the message is clear: people who vape have a higher risk of cancer than those who do not. The study does not provide an exact risk level, but it shows a strong link supported by several types of evidence.
What the Science Found
The research highlights several concerning biological effects linked to vaping:
- DNA damage and oxidative stress observed in human biomarkers
- Inflammation in tissues, a known precursor to cancer development
- Tumour formation in animal studies, particularly in the lungs
- Cellular disruption in lab experiments affects normal biological pathways
Scientists also found cancer-causing compounds in e-cigarette aerosols, such as volatile organic chemicals and heavy metals from the heating elements. These substances are already known to be linked to cancer in other situations.
Beyond the “Safer Alternative” Narrative
E-cigarettes were first promoted as a safer choice than regular cigarettes and even as a way to help people quit smoking. But this study questions that idea.
Co-author Freddy Sitas notes that while vaping is often talked about as a “gateway” to smoking, its own cancer risk has not been fully recognized. The new findings show that vaping itself, not just its connection to cigarettes, may bring serious long-term health risks.
Another concern is “dual use,” which means people who both smoke and vape. Evidence from the United States shows that these people may have up to four times the risk of lung cancer compared to non-users.
A Pattern Seen Before in Public Health
There is a clear historical parallel. It took decades, almost a century, for people to fully accept the dangers of smoking, even though there were early warning signs. Researchers warn that vaping might be on a similar path.
E-cigarettes have only been available for about 20 years. Experts say that waiting decades for long-term data before acting could lead to the same mistakes made in the past.
Looking at the Bigger Picture
This study is important not just for what it found, but also for when it was done. Vaping has become very popular, especially among young people, thanks to flavored products and stylish designs. In many areas, it is now a normal part of daily life.
But while vaping has become normal, new science is starting to tell a different story. The evidence suggests we should be careful, not comfortable.
