On June 19, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University, located near the ancient ruins of the original Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar. This event marks Modi’s first official visit to Bihar since beginning his third term as Prime Minister.
In his address, PM Modi emphasized Nalanda’s historical and cultural significance, stating, “Nalanda is a symbol of India’s academic heritage and vibrant cultural exchange. Books may burn in the flames of fire, but the flames of fire cannot destroy knowledge. Nalanda is an identity, respect, and pride.”

The new campus, built at the cost of Rs 1,700 crore, spans 455 acres and includes two academic blocks with 40 classrooms, two auditoriums, a student hostel for 550 students, an international centre, and an amphitheatre with a capacity of 2,000 people. It also features a faculty club and a sports complex.

Nalanda University, established initially around 450 CE by Gupta Emperor Kumaragupta I, was a prominent center of learning that attracted scholars from around the world. The new campus continues this legacy with schools dedicated to Buddhist studies, philosophy, history, environmental and ecological studies, and management studies.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar praised the new campus and highlighted its historical significance, recalling former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s vision to revive Nalanda University.
Dignitaries attended the inauguration, including External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, and Nalanda University Chancellor Arvind Panagariya. Foreign envoys from 17 countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, China, and Vietnam, were also present.
