As we approach the festive season, Netflix continues to dominate the streaming landscape with an eclectic mix of movies that cater to all tastes. December 2024 is shaping up to be a month full of gripping thrillers, emotional dramas, and even a unique holiday offering. From AI horrors to a biblical epic, here’s a closer look at the most anticipated films you won’t want to miss this month.

    1. Kneecap (2024) – Dec. 2

First on the list is Kneecap, a groundbreaking Irish-language film that made history as the first of its kind to premiere at Sundance. Set in West Belfast during the late 2010s, the story follows two young men from the “ceasefire generation” as they form a politically charged hip-hop group. Directed by Rich Peppiatt, the film dives into the struggles of dealing with societal backlash, police harassment, and internal conflicts, all while using the Irish language as a rebellious symbol of resistance. This film promises to be both provocative and thought-provoking, blending humor with gritty political commentary. Kneecap will be available to stream on Netflix from December 2.

    2. Subservience (2024) – Dec. 5

As AI becomes increasingly ingrained in our lives, Subservience brings a chilling perspective on what could happen when artificial intelligence becomes too close for comfort. Set in the near future, the film centers around Nick (Michele Morrone), a father who buys an AI-driven android named Alice (Megan Fox) to care for his children while his wife battles a life-threatening illness. However, Alice’s initially helpful demeanor takes a dark turn, as she becomes dangerously obsessed with Nick and hostile towards his wife. Directed by S.K. Dale, Subservience explores the terrifying potential of AI in intimate spaces, blending sci-fi and domestic thriller elements. It premieres on Netflix on December 5.

    3. Mary (2024) – Dec. 6

In Mary, director D.J. Caruso offers a fresh perspective on the Nativity story, focusing on the Virgin Mary’s journey. Starring Noa Cohen as Mary and Anthony Hopkins as King Herod, this biblical epic brings historical authenticity to the fore. As Mary navigates her miraculous pregnancy and the perilous journey to protect her newborn, the film combines intimate character-driven moments with sweeping visuals of ancient landscapes. Mary promises to be a grand yet grounded portrayal of faith, motherhood, and survival, debuting on Netflix December 6.

    4. It Ends With Us (2024) – Dec. 9

Based on the bestselling novel by Colleen Hoover, It Ends With Us has already sparked significant conversation due to its emotionally intense storyline. The film follows Lily Bloom (Blake Lively), a college graduate who falls in love with an ambitious neurosurgeon, only to find herself in an abusive relationship. As she confronts the darkness in her marriage, her first love, Atlas (Brandon Sklenar), re-enters her life. Directed by Justin Baldoni, the movie tackles the complexities of love, power dynamics, and personal growth. It Ends With Us will stream on Netflix from December 9.

    5. Maria (2024) – Dec. 11

Angelina Jolie takes on the role of legendary opera singer Maria Callas in Maria, a biographical film about the soprano’s final days. Directed by Pablo Larraín, known for Jackie and Spencer, this poignant narrative explores Callas’ struggle with fading fame, personal heartbreak, and artistic decline. Set in 1977 Paris, the film delves into her memories, including her infamous relationship with Aristotle Onassis, while confronting the existential void left by her waning voice. Maria promises to be an operatic elegy for a musical icon, debuting on Netflix December 11.

    6. Carry-On (2024) – Dec. 13

In a refreshing departure from the usual holiday fare, Carry-On presents Netflix’s take on the Die Hard formula, set in the hectic environment of an airport. Starring Taron Egerton as a TSA agent blackmailed into allowing a dangerous package onto a flight, the film is a tense, fast-paced thriller. As Ethan tries to protect his pregnant girlfriend, the stakes are raised in a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Carry-On is sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats when it premieres on December 13.

    7. The Six Triple Eight (2024) – Dec. 20

Tyler Perry takes a dramatic turn in The Six Triple Eight, telling the inspiring true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—the only all-Black, all-female unit in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II. Led by Captain Charity Adams (Kerry Washington), the unit was tasked with clearing a three-year backlog of letters for American soldiers, all while facing discrimination and harsh living conditions. The all-star cast includes Oprah Winfrey, Susan Sarandon, and Ebony Obsidian. The Six Triple Eight premieres globally on Netflix on December 20, 2024.

A Month for Every Type of Movie Lover

From heart-pounding thrillers to deeply emotional dramas and inspiring historical tales, Netflix has something for every type of movie lover this December. Whether you’re into gripping AI narratives, biblical epics, or a holiday-inspired action flick, this month’s lineup promises to satisfy. Don’t miss out—these films will be streaming soon, so get ready for an exciting December!
