Cormac is an emerging UK-based singer whose new single “Defenceless” is shifting him away from covers and classical crossover songs to original music firmly rooted in contemporary pop. This marks a clear evolution in his sound — shaped by growing up sharing his talent online and learning what does (and doesn’t) work for him as the artist he is now.

In 2020 (age 11) Cormac signed a one-album deal with Decca. From the age of 12 he’s been releasing music independently. This experience gave him early exposure to the music industry but it also led to assumptions about a classical future that no longer reflect who he is today. Rather than allow that history to define him, Cormac is facing it head on and consciously rebuilding — redefining his sound, his audience, and his creative direction, only this time, on his own terms.

Making that shift hasn’t been straightforward. It involves retraining the algorithms that continue to categorise him based on earlier work — a challenge he is actively navigating as part of starting again. His ambition is to earn his place back on the same major stages, including the London Palladium and the Royal Albert Hall, this time through his original music, because audiences want to connect with who he is now.

Although it would have been easier to stay in a lane where he was already finding success, Cormac realised that growing up meant his musical tastes were bound to change too. He loved the music he made before — and it brought recognition and awards — but now he’s focused on writing and performing original songs that feel right for who he is today.

“Defenceless” marks that shift. Written as Cormac began focusing more seriously on original material, the song reflects the uncertainty of being a teenage boy today — wanting to be emotionally open, but unsure how that’s meant to look in real life. It’s a direct, honest piece of writing about second-guessing yourself, trying to be resilient, and figuring things out as you go.

Co-written with Henry Maybury and producer Jon Cohen, “Defenceless” keeps the focus on the vocal and the lyric. The production is deliberately understated, giving the song space to breathe and allowing the emotion to come through without overstatement. It’s reflective rather than dramatic — a snapshot of where Cormac is now, both personally and creatively. The track has already been recognised within the songwriting community, placing as a runner-up in the ‘Unsigned Only’ Songwriting Competition and reaching the finals of the ‘UK Songwriting Contest’. Recent releases have also gained steady traction across streaming platforms, radio, and playlists, alongside coverage from publications including Wonderland, Earmilk, and NOTION. Based in Lancashire, Cormac is no longer trying to fit an expectation — he’s focused on developing his own voice and building from there.
