Acclaimed Russian born, Los Angeles based Cooper Phillip is a force to be reckoned with. The singer, songwriter and famed vocal coach, has just released an empowering anthem of perseverance. We talk with the performer about her writing process, advice to young artists and more.
SO GLAD YOU’RE HERE, COOPER! CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, WHO IS COOPER PHILLIP IN YOUR OWN WORDS?
Hi. Thanks for having me today I’m really excited for the interview. I am a musician in my mind and dreamer in my heart. I was born raised in a small town in Russia and surrounded by classical music since my early years. I love dancing and started ballet. When I was 10 years old I heard Mariah Carey and fell in love with her voice and decided to become a singer. When I was 19 I decided to change my life and move to the United States and start my life from scratch, here I am.
WHAT ASPECT OF MUSIC INTERESTS YOU THE MOST (WRITING / PERFORMING / ETC), AND CONVERSELY, WHAT INTERESTS YOU THE LEAST?
I love performing and singing. I grew up at the era of divas and singing was my main focus from the beginning. I didn’t know how to read music and I was afraid to express myself because I didn’t think I could compose. And then I started writing and it became my most honest area of creativity. I absolutely love collaborating with other writers and tell me stories through my music.
WHAT TRACK HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING RECENTLY?
I listen to a lot of different genres. Right now I’m listening to a lot of classic rnb and gospel.
