Cameron Sage From is an emerging pop artist whose heartfelt lyrics and powerful vocals are making waves in the music industry. In this interview, she shares her journey from musical theatre to songwriting, the inspiration behind her latest single “She’s Not Me,” and her dreams for the future.
WELCOME TO BLACKBIRDNEWS, CAMERON SAGE! WE’RE THRILLED TO HAVE YOU HERE. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AS A YOUNG ARTIST AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE MUSIC.
Thank you for inviting me! I’ve been singing since I could talk and always wanted to be a singer. In school I loved musical theatre and starred in Chicago and Beauty and the Beast but once I started songwriting I knew that was my true calling.
“SHE’S NOT ME” DELVES INTO UNREQUITED LOVE. CAN YOU SHARE THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS SONG AND HOW YOU CONNECTED WITH THE LYRICS?
I wrote the song in high school inspired by my best friend’s crush on our platonic friend and he was obsessed with another girl who barely knew he existed. It’s a common teenager problem! The lyrics represent frustration, envy, loyalty and confusion which my friend’s story inspired but I think we have all been in this situation and felt these feelings at some point.
YOU’VE MENTIONED THAT YOUR MUSIC IS INFLUENCED BY YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES. HOW DO YOU TRANSLATE YOUR EMOTIONS INTO YOUR SONGWRITING?
I get inspiration for songwriting from either my personal experiences or situations I’ve gone through alongside my friends. The lyrics often come to me late at night and I sing them into my phone app. Any emotion I feel can spark a song idea. I am an open book and definitely tend to overshare. I’ll tell my most personal stories to just about anyone who asks!
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED AS A YOUNG ARTIST IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY, AND HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME THEM?
The biggest challenge is finding collaborators that truly understand my vision for my music. I have been playing with different sounds and because I love so many different types of music, finding my sound has not been a straight line. I love creating different types of music.
BEYOND MUSIC, WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PASSIONS AND INTERESTS?
I just moved to LA and it’s been really exciting exploring all areas of the city. California is incredible and I love new experiences!
THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY CAN BE DEMANDING. HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR MUSIC CAREER WITH YOUR PERSONAL LIFE?
I don’t want to get burnt out so I try not to work all the time but my friends in LA are also musicians so we have similar schedules and find lots of time to go out and have fun.
FASHION AND STYLE OFTEN PLAY A ROLE IN AN ARTIST’S IMAGE. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE, AND DOES IT INFLUENCE YOUR MUSIC?
I love fashion and I almost went to fashion design college but I dropped out on the first day because I knew I wanted to devote my time to music. Currently I’ve been describing my style as “mobwife meets bratz doll”. I’m loving faux fur, sunglasses, and knee high boots, but I also like to play with that vibe and make it youthful to fit me and my personality. But I’m young so my style changes all the time. I honestly like a little bit of everything.
WHAT ARE YOUR ASPIRATIONS FOR THE FUTURE, BOTH MUSICALLY AND PERSONALLY?
I hope to release an album within the next year and I would love to go on tour!
