Discover the drive, wisdom, and creative philosophy of a rising star who is masterfully defining his own path.
Welcome to Blackbird News, Jourdan Evans! At just 15, you’re already performing on some of Australia’s biggest stages. For those discovering you today, who is Jourdan Evans when the spotlight is off?
This is a challenging question. I try to be as normal as possible. On stage, I have high energy, mad confidence, and this overall performance attitude that nothing and no one can stop me. But off stage, I’m actually quite calm and like to take a lot of quiet time for myself. Being the public version of me can sometimes be quite tiring, so I think it’s important to sit with yourself and be comfortable with quiet time. That’s also when I get to reflect, review things, and create.
Between school, rehearsals, performances, recording music, and creating your own films, what does a typical day in your life actually look like?
I really like this question. I am a very neat and organized person. Everything is laid out and organized the night before. I usually start my day at the magnificent time of 5.15 a.m., dragging myself out of bed and beginning with a quality gym session for nearly an hour, followed by a healthy breakfast. I like lots of protein and high-energy foods because I need that to get through the long hours of the day. Then I head to school, followed by a couple of hours of performing arts. Then I’m off to dance until late in the evening, home for some dinner, and I like to take some time to stretch before bed, which is usually around 10 p.m. Then I wake up and do it all on repeat, repeat, and repeat.
Many teenagers spend their weekends with friends, while you’re often performing for thousands of people. Do you ever feel like you’re missing out on a “normal” teenage life, or has this become your normal?
It is actually difficult constantly seeing your friends hanging out when you see photos on Instagram or hear about things at school that you were invited to but couldn’t go to. No denying that can make me feel quite sad. But, this passion for performing that I love so much, the opportunities and results that have come with it so far, have also made me realize that it comes with sacrifice and these are the kinds of sacrifices that I’m willing to make for something I truly love.

Your performances require confidence and energy. What helps you stay grounded, motivated, and mentally prepared before stepping onto a stage?
I have tried a lot of different things. For me, what I’ve found works best before I go on stage is a solid 30 minutes of time to myself to go over exactly what I’m going to be doing on stage. I like to go over every little part. It makes me feel confident in the work I’ve done to prepare, and the motivation really comes from the appreciation I feel from the audience and all the people around me. I also think that preparation takes a lot of pressure off me because I know I’ve done the work. It allows me to be present and really enjoy the moment on stage.
You’ve already worked as a singer, actor, producer, editor, and creator. Which role feels most like the real Jourdan, and which one still challenges you the most?
I think it’s hard to characterize yourself as just one thing. Jourdan Evans is all of those roles, and they’re all part of the process. They all challenge me in different ways. I also think learning every side of the industry has made me a better performer and creator. If one area isn’t moving as quickly as another, I can keep creating and learning in different ways. At the end of the day, they’re all different ways of story telling and I love being able to do all of it.
Your upcoming Elvis-inspired short film series is deeply personal. Why was it important to tell your own story through music instead of simply covering classic songs?
This was about much more than recording a cover song. Suspicious Minds is such a timeless and universal piece of music. It has connected with people across generations, cultures, and backgrounds for so many years, and I felt that made it the perfect song to tell my own story through. In most cases, I feel that kids and teens around the world experience the same or similar thoughts, emotions, and difficulties. What was really important to me was making people my age feel like what they’re going through isn’t unique to them and to help normalize those feelings. Using film and music together allowed me to tell a story that other young people could see themselves in and hopefully make them feel a little less alone.
Social media has become a huge part of every young entertainer’s career. How do you balance sharing your life online while still protecting your privacy and staying true to yourself?
What I personally do is use social media purely from a professional standpoint, and I try to only share little bits and pieces of my personal life. For me, it’s important to use social media as a platform to show my creativity and all the skills and tools that I’m learning. I share a few things here and there, but not too much of me personally. Maybe that will change with time, but at the moment, I’m still on a big learning curve in life, and I’m also still a teenager. I want to be able to protect certain parts of myself and keep some things private.

Outside of performing, what are some of the simple things you genuinely enjoy? Whether it’s music, sport, travel, gaming, or spending time with family and friends, what helps you switch off?
Outside of performing, I love listening to really loud music from all different genres. I try every day to listen to a different artist that I may never have heard of, or even one I’m not sure I’ll like, just to give it a try and broaden my perspective. In the little time that I do get off, I also really enjoy tennis. Fitness is really important to me because strength and endurance are a huge part of being a performing artist, so I factor that into my life a lot as well. But I also really enjoy it.
Looking ahead, what kind of artist and person do you hope people will see five or ten years from now? Is there a legacy you already hope to build?
Wow, five years from now. I mean, look, I see myself as a high-energy entertainer. Whether that be on Broadway, performing in stadiums, or on screen, I just want to be able to share everything that I am, everything I’ve learned, and everything I enjoy with people everywhere. As for ten years from now, that’s an even bigger question. From my perspective, I’d love to be a highly respected artist across all genres.
As for a legacy, that’s an even bigger question again, and I’m not sure I’m able to answer it just yet. I’m still figuring myself out as a person and as an entertainer, as I think most 15-year-olds are still trying to work out who they are, what they want to do, and what message they want to leave behind. There are still so many paths for me to explore and learn from.
I can’t give a fair answer on legacy right now, but I do believe there will be one. If I could leave any message at this stage of my life, it would be follow your passion, follow what you believe in, and don’t listen to people who put you down or try to stop you from achieving your dreams. And if you haven’t found your passion yet, keep trying everything, because eventually something will click.
