Austin, TX – Austin-based musician and video artist tawnylawns announces the release of her new single and video “MOSS” (out September 22), the first glimpse of her forthcoming album Overheard At Nickel City, due October 6 via FOIL Imprints.
A wry, poppy ode to those rare humans who somehow see the silver linings in your greatest flaws, “MOSS” is both catchy and bittersweet—an anthem for self-acceptance with a wink at the messy beauty of human connection. The track arrives alongside a kitschy, art-driven video built with stop-motion animation and handmade props, continuing tawnylawns’ reputation for visually inventive, art-department-heavy work.
“This record is a scrapbook of overheard moments—fragments of strangers’ lives that became little truths I could hold onto,” says tawnylawns. “‘MOSS’ is about finding joy in imperfection, and how sometimes the people who love us most are the ones who see our the silver lining in our darkest shadows.”
Overheard At Nickel City was born from a simple practice: when tawnylawns relocated from New York City to Austin in 2021, she began frequenting local bars and jotting down conversations. Those overheard words became the backbone of the albume—a collection of pop songs about transitions, late-life love, and the humor and heartbreak of letting go, filtered through the poetry of everyday voices.

tawnylawns (Elissa LeCoque) is an Austin-based musician, video artist, and co-founder of the experimental electronic label FOIL. She is also one half of the Brooklyn-based synth duo Kodacrome. Her work spans analog synth-driven pop, orchestral scoring (including the 2024 Monolith score with the Budapest Scoring Orchestra), and a decade of visually inventive music videos.
A recipient of residencies at the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity, Mudhouse (Crete), and Mauser Foundation (Costa Rica), tawnylawns combines her background in classical piano and screenwriting with a flair for meticulous art direction—building sets, props, and stop-motion animation for her own videos. Her past releases have been featured by KCRW, BBC Radio 6, The Line of Best Fit, Vice’s Creators Project and more.
