The Downfall of Bollywood at the Box Office

Bollywood, once a leading industry at the box office, is facing a significant rough patch since the Covid happened. While the industry has produced some remarkable movies over the years, the recent trends show a decline in audience turnout and box office collection.

In 2023, people thought Bollywood was back because of superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s 2 highest grossing films, Pathaan and Jawan. However, it seems that it was the comeback of the superstar, not the industry.

In 2024, Stree 2 did excellent business at the box office and broke all the records, but superstar Akshay Kumar’s Khel Khel Mein clashed with the horror-comedy franchise and failed to gain box office success. The moviegoers often prefer choosing one movie, especially when two big movies clash at the box office.

One of the biggest issues the Hindi film industry is facing is that the audiences get to watch a newly released movie on an OTT platform after a month or two, so they have become quite choosy before going to a theatre to watch a movie. On the other hand, the whole experience of watching a movie in a theatre has become expensive, from buying an expensive ticket to buying food in a theatre hall.
