Alt-pop empress I’MMORTAL unleashed her third single, ‘KILLED U IN A DREAM’, on the 7th of June via her own imprint, Immortality. I’MMORTAL is a New York and London-based genre-blending music producer, vocalist, visual artist, and creative director. I’MMORTAL launched herself into the digital sphere in August 2023 with the release of her debut tech-house single, ‘Versace Spaceship’. Her second single, a cheeky electropop anthem titled ‘Supervillain’  followed in October, receiving support from notable tastemakers CLASH Magazine and Earmilk. Despite being relatively new to the music scene, I’MMORTAL has seen a steady incline in streams, monthly listeners, and hundreds of organic playlist placements, with her first two singles garnering 50K streams across platforms.

‘KILLED U IN A DREAM’ was produced by I’MMORTAL herself, with additional production by Danis Zhang and additional drum programming by Duanna. The track was mixed and mastered by Mikaelin “Blue” Bluespruce, who has worked with the likes of Solange, Blood Orange, and Carly Rae Jepsen.

Hailing from California, I’MMORTAL spent her childhood and teenage years playing violin in orchestras, unknowingly developing composition skills crucial for her current music production. With a theater background, she discovered her love for singing during high school musicals. Despite a fondness for classical music, she’s an avid listener of EDM, drawn to its gritty basslines and synthetic production. I’MMORTAL’s audio-visual synesthesia makes fusing otherworldly visuals to her imaginative beats only come naturally to her. Her campy visual work often encompasses themes of death and rebirth, the natural world versus artificial constructs, femininity, and her AAPI identity.

With a sound influenced by Sevdaliza, Britney Spears, Lady GaGa, Lana Del Rey, Bjork, SOPHIE and many other femme avant-pop luminaries, her sound is sure to be enjoyed by fans of those artists and  Alison Wonderland, Zhu, Deadmau5, Pastel Ghost and Billie Eilish.

A departure from the playful tone of her first two singles, ‘KILLED U IN A DREAM’ is a dark, haunting exploration of revenge, grief, and rebirth. The song opens as a brooding anthem with a catchy hook, trap drums and cinematic pop strings. The sonic elements begin dissolving into glitchy puddles, shape-shifting into a pulsing dreamscape, darkier and trippier than before, with hypnotic ricocheting synths and I’MMORTAL’s vocals, smouldering yet aloof, floating over the fray.

I’MMORTAL divulged: “‘KILLED U IN A DREAM’ is ultimately a song about rebirth. During the two years that I spent working on the track, rebirth was a massive theme in my life both personally and artistically, and I wanted the track to reflect that sonically. My intention was for the song itself to sound like it was dying and being reborn, so I added an eerie BPM and key change half way through to create the feeling of a snake slithering out of its own skin. I also wanted the song to feel timeless, so a lot of the classical elements of the song such as the opera vocal sample and the violins were processed through effects often used in electronic music.”
