Peter Manning Robinson is once again expanding the world of instrumental music with his new single and music video, “Bent Out of Shape.” The Los Angeles pianist and Emmy Award-winning composer brings playful energy, whimsical piano melodies, and real emotion to a track that arrives just when many listeners need comfort and hope.
Robinson wrote “Bent Out of Shape” during a tough time marked by personal challenges and worldwide uncertainty. He says he needed “an uplifting experience…some positivity,” and music helped him work through his feelings and tough moments. That honesty comes through in the song, giving it a human touch even though it sounds light and joyful.
The music video, directed by Robinson’s longtime collaborator Klaus Hoch, brings another level of storytelling to the song. Filmed in a stunning seaside mansion, the film shows two people looking back on their shared memories as they try to mend their relationship. The cinematic setting matches the music’s emotional journey from reflection to healing and hope.
Robinson’s career is all about reinvention and bold creativity. He was born in Chicago and grew up in both Vancouver and Los Angeles. He started playing piano at three and was performing professionally by twelve. Over time, he’s worked in film, television, orchestral music, and live shows, earning praise for projects like Above and Below and Without a Trace.
A turning point in Robinson’s life came in his early twenties when severe tendonitis almost ended his career. Instead of giving up, he spent years retraining both physically and artistically. This journey led him to invent the Refractor Piano™, a unique acoustic instrument that lets him perform “Refracted Music” live, with no digital help or prerecorded sounds.
Although Robinson is well known for his experimental Refractor Piano™ work, his new neo-classical album Excursions brings him back to solo acoustic piano. This personal album explores heartbreak, grief, resilience, and healing through emotional pieces. “Bent Out of Shape” is one of the album’s highlights, mixing sadness with hope and showing that creativity can come from hard times.
With more than 1.2 million streams and a growing international audience, Peter Manning Robinson continues to prove that instrumental music can tell stories beyond words. Through Excursions and tracks like “Bent Out of Shape,” he invites listeners into a cinematic emotional world filled with vulnerability, imagination, and hope.
