The ongoing feud between South Indian stars Dhanush and Nayanthara has captured widespread attention, with allegations and legal disputes making headlines. The controversy stems from a Netflix documentary and has reignited old tensions that date back to their collaboration on the 2015 hit film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan.

The latest clash began with Dhanush filing a ₹10 crore lawsuit over a three-second behind-the-scenes (BTS) clip featured in Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale, a Netflix documentary chronicling the actress’s journey. According to Dhanush, as the producer of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, the footage is his intellectual property, and its inclusion without his consent constitutes copyright infringement.

In an open letter, Nayanthara accused Dhanush of harboring a personal grudge and stooping to an “all-time low” by pursuing the lawsuit. This prompted a strong response from Dhanush’s legal team, which issued an ultimatum to Netflix and Nayanthara, demanding the removal of the clip within 24 hours. Failure to comply, they warned, would result in further legal action.

The controversy has brought renewed focus to Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, a pivotal film for both stars. While the movie was a critical and commercial success, it also marked the beginning of Nayanthara’s relationship with the film’s director, Vignesh Shivan, whom she later married. However, it was also a period of growing tension between her and Dhanush.

Reports suggest that budget overruns during the film’s production strained their professional relationship. Though the movie performed well at the box office, rumors circulated that Dhanush incurred losses as the producer, which reportedly caused lingering resentment.

Dhanush’s legal stance is rooted in his rights as the producer of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. His legal team argued that the documentary clip was used without authorization and disputed claims that he did not commission the footage. “Your client has stated that my client has not commissioned any person to shoot the behind-the-scenes footage, and the said statement is baseless,” his lawyer asserted.

In her letter, Nayanthara portrayed Dhanush’s actions as a personal vendetta, accusing him of making disparaging comments about her and her husband, Vignesh Shivan, during and after the production of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. These accusations have fueled the animosity between the two stars.

The feud has divided fans and sparked intense discussion in the South Indian film industry. Some view Dhanush’s actions as a legitimate exercise of his rights, while others see it as an unnecessary escalation of old grievances. Meanwhile, Nayanthara’s supporters argue that her achievements and personal milestones, including her relationship with Vignesh, are being unfairly targeted.

    What’s Next?

As the deadline for Dhanush’s ultimatum looms, the industry watches closely to see if Netflix and Nayanthara will comply or choose to defend the inclusion of the disputed footage. With both legal teams standing firm, the matter may escalate further, potentially setting a precedent for how intellectual property disputes are handled in Indian cinema.

For now, the dispute remains a poignant reminder of how creative collaborations can leave behind unresolved personal and professional conflicts, even years after the cameras stop rolling.
