Creative inspiration is a universal way to “share the love and be kind because we are all connected.” says Roy Barker as he brings to Melbourne audiences a vulnerable and hilarious one-man show called ‘Don’t Get Carried Away’ that reminds us all to follow our dreams. “The most meaningful thing to me about Don’t Get Carried Away is the overall theme of never giving up. No matter how old you are, it’s never too late to pursue a dream”

When Roy turned 50, he decided that it was time to get carried away and tell his family that now was finally his time to pursue acting and become the actor he always was. “From the moment I sat in a theatre and the music began and the curtains opened, I knew I wanted to be up there.” Roy kept that a secret for most of his life fearing humiliation and ridicule. But on that fateful day at 50 years old, it became entirely clear that he was hiding a gift from the world. “I want to inspire my children. I want them to know it’s ok to make mistakes and to get distracted along the way. And if I inspire others that’s great too!”

Roy is a recognisable face on the Australian screen and from June 10-14, Roy will be rapping, Shakespeare-ing and delighting audiences at The Butterfly Club in Melbourne. “‘Don’t Get Carried Away’ allows me to share the stories of my adventures. I do hope audiences will see themselves and relate.”

    Don't Get Carried Away

Here is a little taste of DGCA:

From the time he danced out of his mother’s womb, Roy Barker wanted to be a performer. But life, and bullies, kept getting in the way. Growing up in a brutally tough neighbourhood, Roy survived broken bones, cuts and bruises, by learning how to be invisible—not ideal when you want to be a star. In Roy’s debut solo show, he takes you on a whirlwind ride through the comedic highs and moving lows of following his dream from stage to screen. From Shakespeare to rap, and everything in between, Roy discovers at the age of 50 that it’s never too late to get carried away.

Tickets to the wonderful Roy Barker’s ‘Don’t Get Carried Away’ are on sale now at thebutterflyclub.com and Eventbrite, playing at The Butterfly Club in Melbourne, Australia June 10-14, 2025. Get along to this fun and inspiring show!
