Innovative Agricultural Technologies: Enhancing Productivity and Sustainability

Technology has changed the world for the better in many ways by making systems more productive, time efficient and sustainable. In just the past few decades, agricultural technologies have revolutionized farming systems. Agriculture experts, technology companies and innovators are researching, developing and implementing technologies that will enhance productivity and sustainability on farms. This effort is increasingly important as the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) projects a necessary 47% increase by 2050 in crop calories compared to the 2011 baseline to feed the growing population. The USDA states some of the benefits of agricultural technologies include higher crop productivity, decreased use of water and fertilizers, reduced environmental impact, and greater efficiencies with lower prices. Let’s discuss some of the most innovative agricultural technologies on the rise.

    Biologicals

Agriculture experts recognize the rise of biologicals and biostimulants as key innovations in increasing productivity and efficiency on farms. While there are many classifications, biologicals overall are naturally derived products that assist farmers with pest management in a more natural way while increasing yields. The history of biologicals shows that the use of biological products is not a new concept, but rather their growth was slowed with the increased use of synthetic chemicals. Biologicals are now growing at a rapid rate with the market expected to reach 6.8 billion by 2028, which shows their importance in agriculture in the years to come. These products, when used in conjunction with precision agriculture, will increase their impact on productivity and sustainability on farms worldwide.

    Artificial Intelligence

In most industries today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is creating opportunities that have never been seen or implemented before. The agricultural industry is no different, and AI technologies are increasing across the industry. The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) supports AI activities including machine learning, remote sensing, satellite imagery, drones, precision technologies, autonomous robots and more. Harvesting crops takes less time but produces greater harvests with the integration of AI technology. AI is also contributing to sustainability efforts with its ability to make fast decisions in regard to management processes related to soil health. The Agribusiness community expects AI will continue to increase and make its mark on sustainability and efficiency in the industry.

    Precision Agriculture

Precision Agriculture is an overarching term that incorporates many innovations including biologicals and AI. When considering innovations on the rise, precision agriculture must be included. The USDA defines precision agriculture as “technological advances meant to propel agriculture into the computerized information-based world.”  Adopting precision agriculture can increase production, decrease labor and inform on farm decisions predicting the best outcomes for farmers and consumers. The market for precision agriculture is expected to reach 24.09 billion by 2030, which shows its importance in innovation trends. Benefits including satellite farming, specialized sensing devices, robotics, drones and GPS guidance are all examples of innovations on the rise within precision agriculture.

    Final Thoughts

Increasing productivity and sustainability on farms is a great consideration of the agricultural technologies being developed and implemented. Biologicals, Artificial Intelligence and Precision Agriculture are just a few of the many incredible innovations being introduced to agribusinesses today. As experts in the industry work to feed a growing population, innovation in agricultural technology is paramount to farmers across the globe.
