From Copenhagen to Pune, urban planners are prioritizing public transport, bicycle lanes, and walkable neighbourhoods over car-centric development. This shift not only reduces carbon emissions but also eases congestion and improves public health. The “15-minute city” model promotes having essential services within a 15-minute walk or bike ride from home. It is gaining traction in metropolises like Paris and Melbourne. Urban planners are radically rethinking how they allocate space in cities, aiming to make urban life more human-centric and less dependent on long commutes.
Expanding Urban Green Spaces
Green infrastructure is also now a city investment to fight against the impact of urban heat islands and ecological balance. The common is rooftop gardens, vertical forests, and park rewilded. Urban green spaces not only enhance air quality and lower temperatures, but they also assist people with psychological relief. The examples of the city of Bengaluru and Ahmedabad in India are working to avert the serious deficits in electricity and water by experimenting with climate-responsive architecture to avoid the need for air conditioning and lights.
India’s Slow but Steady Transition
The path of getting to sustainable cities is tougher in India, where urbanization has been rapid compared to infrastructure, but this is not impossible. Under the Smart Cities Mission, Pune and Surat have seen improvement in waste segregation and the digitization of utilities. Gurugram’s intervention towards creating cycling infrastructure, Hyderabad’s city initiatives for rejuvenating its lakes, all indicate the growing awareness and action. However, change has not been as rapid. It is because uneven implementation, the absence of public participation, and bureaucratic hurdles have seen progress being very slow.
The Road Ahead
As cities face increasing pressure from environmental, social, and economic stresses, the shift toward greener, more sustainable urban planning is not just a trend—it’s a necessity. To a large extent, these transformations will be successful only to the degree to which public engagement and accountability contribute to the success. Our cities are eco glowing up, but the future of that new normal or a fad of a phase is contingent on long-term commitment and the collective action to make it so.
