Bollywood star Govinda skipped Avatar in a shocking revelation about how he turned down a role in James Cameron’s box office-stopper. In an interview with Mukesh Khanna, Govinda shared that he was being paid a huge Rs 18 crore for the movie but did not accept because of health issues and the movie’s too-long shooting schedule.
Why Govinda Rejected Avatar
Govinda explained that the role required him to work for 410 days and apply blue body paint to blend in with the Na’vi characters. He was afraid of developing severe health complications due to long-term exposure to body paint, which could result in hospitalization. Despite the well-paying opportunity, he opted to prioritize his health above the chance.
Moreover, Govinda asserted that he had proposed the title, Avatar, to James Cameron. In his account, the director told him about the story of the film by describing how the lead character was a paraplegic who transformed into an alien-like creature. Govinda did not want to perform in a role like this and therefore declined the offer.
The Impact of Avatar on Cinema
When Avatar opened in theaters in 2009, it revolutionized the art of film-making with revolutionary CGI, motion capture, and 3D technology. Starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver, the film carried onlookers away to the breathtaking world of Pandora. Cameron’s revolutionary motion capture methods enabled stunningly realistic digital actors, redefining Hollywood conventions. The film became the all-time highest-grossing movie, generating over $2 billion in ticket sales globally.
Govinda’s Issues in Bollywood
Aside from the Avatar exclusive, Govinda discussed the issues he encountered in Bollywood. He pointed out that a powerful cabal of industry professionals deliberately made an effort to have him kept at arm’s length, which destroyed his career. He also explained how taking principal film roles could ruin relationships in the industry because actors would have to constantly apologize in order to get back on good terms with powerful members.
A Choice That Changed His Career?
Govinda’s walkout from Avatar is a question that comes to mind—if he had done the film, would his career have been different? Although the movie was a worldwide hit, he stuck to this decision, keeping his own health above Hollywood fame. His tale is the evidence of difficult choices thespians must make, proving success is not always fame and fortune but the well-being of oneself.
