If you have an interest in getting into freelance as a career, then there are many things that you should know and many resources you should be engaging with. This article aims to give you a baseline of important knowledge which you can build to properly establish yourself within the freelance industry.

    What to Know About Freelance

So the first question you have to ask is, what is the most important thing to know about freelance working? While the answer is layered, it is actually relatively simple. The most important thing to know about freelance working is that you are your own boss. This might seem obvious on the face of things, but it does have several implications that you need to consider.

First of all, as your own boss, you are entirely and completely responsible for your own work and your own paycheck. That means that if you are not consistently and reliably landing work with good clients, you are not going to be making enough to support yourself. However, as your own boss, it is also your responsibility to sort the good clients from the bad and to find clients that are worth working with. What’s more, as your own boss, you decide when you work and when you stop working, which can make it difficult to separate your freelance work from your everyday life.

Fortunately, there are plenty of resources and skills that freelancers have available to them. These are tools that you can use to ensure that you are engaging with the industry in the healthiest and most effective way possible.

    Key Skills to Develop

Developing the right skills is one of the most important things you can do as a freelancer to ensure that you can engage with the industry properly.

Time Management.Effectively keeping control of your time is the bread and butter of a freelancer. If you can’t keep your time management under control, then you are going to find freelance a very challenging industry. This is because effective time management means getting your tasks and deadlines done on time, but also separating freelance from your daily life.

Financial Management.Freelancers need to develop a strong grasp of financial management. The reasons for this are twofold. First, it will help to ensure that you are managing your money in the best way possible. Second, it will help you keep track of any financial responsibilities that you might have as a result of your freelance career. This includes taxes.

    Resources to Utilize

Finally, there are plenty of resources and tools that freelancers can bring to their advantage in order to make their life a little bit easier. A couple of these are detailed below.

Job Boards. When it comes to finding work as a freelancer, you are going to need to make sure you are taking advantage of the right tools. There are plenty of job boards available online, and often there are job boards specific to certain industries. So if you were looking to get into shipping work, then Shiply’s job board, where you can pick up hot shot loads, will be more useful to you than a job board more dedicated to casting calls for voice actors.

Freelance Communities. The right communities are some of the most important and supportive resources that a freelancer could ever have. Not only are these full of industry veterans that are more than willing to help the newcomers work their way up. These are also often a brilliant place to find work.
