Acclaimed singer-songwriter, artist and musician Doctor Noize has released his new retrospective album, Positive Energy! (The Music of Doctor Noize), bringing together 28 tracks that showcase the creativity, diversity and adventurous spirit that have shaped his musical journey.
The collection takes listeners into what Doctor Noize describes as a world of “musical adventurousness, diversity, complex composition, performance and production.” The album has been curated to give audiophiles, children, parents and educators a sense of the wider creative journey found across the Doctor Noize catalogue.
One of the focus tracks on the album is “The Monster Dance,” a playful song that has also been licensed to anchor a new show featuring four monsters at Universal Kids Theme Park & Resort, alongside characters such as SpongeBob, Minions, Trolls and Shrek.
Doctor Noize is known for creating music that combines entertainment with learning. A chart-topping children’s recording and performing artist, he is also a Stanford Music graduate, Master of Recording Arts, entrepreneur, teacher, author, speaker, app creator, studio owner, community builder and lifelong learner.
His journey into music began at a young age, after music became an important source of comfort and strength when he lost most of his family in a single year. From that experience, he developed a lasting belief in giving back through the art that had helped him.
Across three decades of charting music, Doctor Noize has developed a catalogue built around joyful performances, high-quality production, collaborations and strong musical storytelling. His albums often combine inspirational learning with positive stories that can be enjoyed by audiences of different ages.
His work explores subjects including musical instruments and fundamentals, language, leadership, sustainability, equity, diversity and inclusion. Rather than presenting these subjects as traditional lessons, Doctor Noize incorporates them into stories and characters designed to make learning entertaining.
Live performance is another important part of his work. Known for his one-man-band shows, Doctor Noize sings and plays multiple instruments, using looping and live recording techniques during performances. He has also created songs with audiences on the spot.
His performances range from acoustic concerts and book readings to larger productions, including symphony performances of Phineas McBoof Crashes the Symphony, a work designed to introduce audiences to the world of orchestral music.
Education is also central to Doctor Noize’s career. His workshops and teaching programs draw on his Master’s thesis on Recording Arts Education as well as decades of experience in learning, leadership and community building.
Over the years, he has served as an Arts Department Head at a high school and as a university Director of Recording Arts and Professor. He has also served on the boards of organisations including the Recording Academy, Children’s Music Network, Stanford Alumni in Sustainability Climate Action Forum and Christian Youth Theater.
He runs Stanford’s summer Recording Arts program and serves as Chair of the Pikes Peak State College Recording Arts Technology Program Advisory Board.
Behind Doctor Noize is also his alter ego, Cory Cullinan, who has built a career creating music for adult audiences. Cullinan is a songwriter, recording and performing artist, commissioned composer for stage, screen and symphony, producer and avant-garde electronic musician. He is also the owner of multimedia production house Reach Studios and writer of the Noizeletter.
While his professional life spans music, education and creative production, family remains an important source of inspiration. Doctor Noize is a husband and father of three daughters, and he describes his family as a major source of his inspiration and purpose.
Returning to Positive Energy!, the retrospective offers listeners an opportunity to explore the breadth of the Doctor Noize catalogue in one collection. Each album in his wider body of work is built around a particular story and learning goal, covering subjects such as leadership and teamwork, grammar and words, musical structure, self-sufficiency, environmentalism and diversity.
The 28-track album therefore works as more than a collection of individual songs. It provides an introduction to the larger creative universe Doctor Noize has developed through music, storytelling and education.
At the centre of that universe is Phineas McBoof, Doctor Noize’s main monkey character, who continues to accompany him on a journey focused on creativity, curiosity, character and community through music, art and words.
With Positive Energy! (The Music of Doctor Noize), Doctor Noize brings together years of musical experimentation, storytelling and educational creativity in a retrospective designed to introduce both longtime listeners and new audiences to his distinctive approach to music.
