Tom Emlyn, a singer-songwriter from Cardiff, has just released his new single, A Series of Misunderstandings, through Dirty Carrot Records. Released on April 10, 2026, this is the third single from his upcoming album, due out this summer.
The song blends psychedelic pop, Americana, and indie influences, giving it a thoughtful and reflective feel. It is also one of the oldest songs on the new album, first written more than ten years ago. The single looks at how our identities change as we experience disappointments, mistakes, and unexpected events in life.
At its heart, A Series of Misunderstandings is about finding meaning in everyday life. The song highlights the small frustrations, missed connections, and quiet disappointments we all experience. Using vivid imagery, it tells a story of change, showing how each moment can unexpectedly shape who we become.
Musically, the track shows Emlyn’s usual warmth and experimental style. It features slide guitar, banjo played with a violin bow, and a memorable solo recorded in one take, giving the song a raw and natural sound. There are hints of influences like Elliott Smith and classic folk and rock, but the music still feels unique to Emlyn.
Over the years, Tom Emlyn has built a reputation as one of Wales’ most intriguing and prolific artists. Described by BBC Radio Wales presenter Adam Walton as a “peripatetic musical genius,” his work is known for its emotional depth, lyrical sharpness, and layered storytelling. His music often maps an alternative South Walian landscape, blending personal narrative with cultural observation, all wrapped in a lo-fi, genre-fluid sound.
Between 2022 and 2025, Emlyn released five albums, showing both consistency and range in his work. His music blends folk, jazz, blues, psychedelia, and poetry, making it feel nostalgic yet fresh. Outlets like Clash Magazine and God Is In The TV have praised how he mixes sadness with humor, creating songs that connect emotionally and intellectually.
In addition to his solo work, Emlyn often collaborates with other musicians in Wales, playing with bands like Rainyday Rainbow and Papa Jupe’s TC. His skills as a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter have led people to call him a “musical chameleon” because he easily adapts to different styles and projects.
His live presence continues to grow, with a packed schedule of performances lined up across the UK in 2026, including appearances at Devauden Festival, Bristol’s Cafe Kino, and London’s The Glad.
With A Series of Misunderstandings, Tom Emlyn shows again that he can turn personal reflection into something everyone can relate to. The song is more than just music; it reflects how life’s small misunderstandings can shape our biggest stories.
