Travelling to a foreign country is a dream for many, and exploring its roads by driving can be an exhilarating experience. While some opt for public transport or taxis, others prefer the freedom of driving themselves. For Indians, driving in foreign lands is not just a dream; it’s a reality, thanks to agreements with several countries that recognize Indian driving licenses. Here’s a list of 10 countries where you can hit the road with your Indian license:

    1. United States of America

Indian driving licenses are valid for one year in the USA. However, they must be translated into English if not already in that language, and travellers need to carry an attested I-94 form as proof of entry.

    2. Australia

In regions like New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and the Australian Capital Territory, Indian driving licenses are valid for a year. For Northern Australia, a permit might be needed after three months.

    3. Canada

Indian citizens can drive in Canada for up to 60 days with their Indian license. After that, a separate permit may be required. Cars are driven on the right side of the road in Canada.

    4. United Kingdom

Valid for a year in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, Indian licenses must be in English. Drivers can operate specific classes of vehicles, but they must drive on the left side of the road.

    5. New Zealand

Indian licenses are accepted for a year in New Zealand. After that, an NZ driver’s license or international driving permit may be needed. Drivers must be at least 21 years old.

    6. Switzerland

Switzerland allows Indian license holders to drive for a year. Cars must be driven on the right side of the road, and licenses must be in English.

    7. Germany

Indian licenses are valid for six months in Germany. They must be in English or German; after six months, an international driving permit or German license may be necessary.

    8. France

Valid for up to a year in France, Indian licenses need to be translated into French. Cars are driven on the right side of the road.

    9. South Africa

Indian licenses are accepted for a year in South Africa. They must be in English, and an international driving permit might be required to rent a vehicle.

    10. Sweden

Indian licenses are valid for a year in Sweden. They must be in English or other approved languages like Swedish or German.

While these countries accept Indian licenses, obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP) can expand your driving options further. The IDP can be acquired from your local Regional Transport Office (RTO), enabling you to drive in many other countries around the world. So, get ready to embark on an unforgettable driving adventure abroad with your Indian license.
